We were honoured this week to welcome representatives of the Verkhovna Rada to Geneva to how to ensure respect for International Humanitarian Law and human rights violations in the context of the ongoing conflict in Ukraine. These consultations were possible thanks to the generosity of the Swiss Federal Department of Defence, Civil Protection and Sport and the expertise of the ICRC and the Graduate Institute of International and Development Studies.
29 Jun 2022In addition to building the capacity of our partners and stakeholders to integrate gender equality into reform and governance initiatives, we also invest in the ability of our own staff to be able to build gender into our projects, research, and policy work. At this week’s gender training for DCAF staff at our headquarters in Geneva, team members looked at how gender issues influence the differing security needs of men and women, and how to integrate these needs into project design and monitoring.
29 Jun 2022“Media and security forces have to work together for the public. We are inseparable. We need to listen to one another,” said Deputy Commissioner Mesfin, President of the Ethiopian Police University at the opening ceremony of our training last week. Thirty officers attended three days of frank exchanges on journalistic independence, the rights of citizens to information, and how effective relationships with the media can be a powerful tool in building public confidence in policing. Funded by the Dutch Ministry of Foreign Affairs, it was part of our ongoing work to support the media’s role in good security sector governance.
27 Jun 20222021 was a tough year. COVID fueled fragility and insecurity the world over, making reform and good governance of the security sector more important than ever. Driven by the needs of our national and international partners, we adjusted to the challenges of COVID and found new ways to support them. In our just- released 2021 Annual Report we offer selected highlights of the difference we were able to make, in policy and in practice, in more than 70 countries around the world. We hope you enjoy it.
24 Jun 2022This week we brought 16 North Macedonian Members of Parliament and staff to Geneva for a roundtable on oversight of security and intelligence work. The event underscored the essential role of lawmakers in the democratization of the security sector. Participants discussed the main challenges of holding the intelligence sector accountable, and exchanged views on how to be more effective in their role. It was part of our intelligence oversight programme in North Macedonia that is generously supported by Switzerland, the Netherlands, Sweden, and the European Union.
