Last week the National Police of Colombia and the Foundation for Press Freedom launched a set of guidelines to help address ongoing tensions and mistrust between the media and police. The guidelines are a milestone, marking more than two years of collaboration and commitment to improving their working relationship. This initiative was funded by the German Ministry of Foreign Affairs as part of our project to help strengthen the oversight role of civil society and the media in Colombia.
05 Aug 2022This week we marked a milestone in our support for the reform initiatives undertaken by the Ethiopian Federal Police (EFP). Started in 2020, our programme has helped senior leadership to define a change management process that will strengthen the efficiency and accountability of the police. It has also seen the development of the EFP’s first comprehensive public complaints mechanism, and a clear framework for the collection and analysis of forensic evidence – the first of its kind in the region.
05 Aug 2022After six years at the helm of DCAF, Thomas Guerber has left for a new role helping to prepare Switzerland for its upcoming tenure as a non-permanent member on the UN Security Council. “The six-year journey I’ve made with my terrific colleagues at DCAF has been a profound, transformational and truly gratifying experience, both professionally and personally,” said Guerber. While a new Director is recruited, DCAF will be led by Mark Downes, Acting Director and head of our Operations Department.
02 Aug 2022At the recent DCAF Days in Brussels, our experts met with representatives of EU institutions and member states to take stock of developments in SSG/R policy and practice and explored the role of SSG/R in the implementation of the EU’s Strategic Compass. The discussions this year were framed by the significant global geopolitical changes of the last six months, and how they affect the EU’s approach to supporting security governance, especially in fragile and conflict-affected states.
