Preventing violence, protecting rights: Integrating security sector governance into the UPR
Side Event to the 60th Session of the UN Human Rights Council
Building on DCAF’s analysis of Security Sector Governance language across previous Universal Periodic Review cycles and country-level experiences on integrating SSG priorities in UPR, this side event will explore how the UPR can be better leveraged to promote rights-based, people-centred security institutions.
Specifically, the discussion will:
• Highlight the role of SSG in addressing root causes of violence and fostering inclusive and resilient societies through the promotion of human rights;
• Reflect on how SSG issues are currently reflected in the UPR process and identify potential opportunities for promoting more effective and accountable rights-based security governance; and
• Share experiences and practical entry points for integrating SSG into UPR recommendations and follow-up.
