Description

This background note explores how to apply lessons from the Women, Peace and Security agenda to advance the Youth, Peace and Security agenda, specifically through a security sector governance and reform lens.

For many young people, especially from marginalised communities, the security sector can be a source of insecurity rather than protection.

It examines three core pillars: prioritizing youth protection needs to strengthen accountability, localizing security initiatives by adapting Women, Peace and Security tools for youth contexts, and promoting inclusion through intersectional analysis.

By drawing parallels between the two agendas, the paper provides actionable takeaways for integrating youth perspectives into security sector policies and practices.

The parallel existence of the Women, Peace and Security and the Youth, Peace and Security agendas demonstrates that security must be understood through the lens of identity and marginalisation.
