On the world stage, the importance of responsible business conduct is increasingly recognized. To ensure security, human rights and economic development for all, public and private sectors must work together. The need for such cooperation is highest in states where security risks are acute. 

A number of innovative initiatives have emerged in recent years that promote security, development and human rights in relation to business operations. Two in particular focus on an industry that has grown significantly over recent years: the global private security industry. A third focuses on a major industry present in numerous contexts: the extractive sector.
