On 27^th-28^th August 2013, the Centre for Strategic Studies (CSS) at Mzuzu University  hosted a workshop for the Southern African Defence and Security Management network (SADSEM) in partnership with DCAF. The workshop, which was held in Lilongwe, Malawi, brought together nineteen participants including representatives from nine SADSEM network institutions and academic and gender experts from the Southern African region. The overall aim of the workshop was to review the executive programmes offered by SADSEM-member institutions with a view to integrating gender. More specifically, the workshop sought to achieve the following objectives:

• to validate a draft outline of a new executive course on Gender and Security
• to consolidate input and finalize gender review of two existing executive courses namely Security Sector Governance, and Parliamentary Oversight of Defence and Security
• to share lessons and experiences in the delivery of gender-related training and education in the security sectors in Southern Africa

Most of the workshop sessions were dedicated to discussing the three executive short courses. In addition, the programme included presentations by participants on their experiences of gender and security training within SADSEM, masculinity and protection, and integrating gender in the Malawi Police Service.

The workshop was held as part of a Gender Training and Education Capacity Development Project agreed to under the SADSEM–DCAF Memorandum of Understanding. It was the last in a series of three workshops, the previous ones having been held in  Gabarone, Botswana in May 2012 and Johannesburg, South Africa in June 2013. The report includes a summary of each workshop session as well as the list of participants and workshop agenda.
