The APCOF integrates security sector reform considerations into SDG 16 indicators and Voluntary National Review reporting in South Africa

In South Africa, the African Policing Oversight Forum (APCOF) has integrated security sector reform considerations into SDG indicators and Voluntary National Review (VNR) reporting.

In 2017, the APCOF supported a UNDP project to strengthen the role of civil society in monitoring the implementation of SDG 16 in South Africa by developing a more inclusive and participatory monitoring methodology. The project offered a unique opportunity for civil society to engage directly with the national statistics agency (Stats SA) and thus have some influence over the development of national-level indicators for measuring progress towards SDG 16 targets. Such initiatives exemplify how SDG 16.7 can be advanced through measures to ensure an inclusive and participatory approach to developing SDG indicators and VNR reporting.
