In Kenya, the Commission on Administrative Justice-Office of the Ombudsman (CAJ) has established an alternative dispute mechanism to more efficiently resolve citizen complaints concerning maladministration.
Mechanisms such as this provide a platform for mediation between citizens and the government; and in this case, feature case management deadlines to ensure disputes are resolved quickly, often doing so at a faster pace than formal justice mechanisms. The mandate of ombuds institutions is directly related to SDG Indicator 16.3.3, concerning the proportion of the population who have accessed a formal or informal dispute resolution mechanism in the previous two years.
