[NIGER] IGSS review of Covid-19 measures in Niamey

During the week beginning 27 April, DCAF assisted IGSS to review the services and measures deployed to contain the spread of Covid-19 in Niger. The team, comprising one inspector and several audit officers (featured here at the Niamey 2000 station and at the DGPN), performed spot checks of police services and the conduct of officers in the capital.

Interior security forces (ISF) are responsible for enforcing regulations such as the quarantine of the city of Niamey, the curfew (lifted on 13/05/2020) and the ban on mass gatherings (ban lifted on 13/05/2020 for places of worship). Their duties also include making public appeals for compliance with particular preventive measures known as "barrier" gestures.

The state of emergency requires ISF to mobilise personnel on a large scale, to reorganise services and assignments to ensure restrictions on movement and some individual freedoms are respected, and to increase their capacity to deal with any potential incidents that may arise.
