Building widespread knowledge on SSG/R in North Macedonia We recently launched a ‘train the trainers’ process to empower North Macedonian parliamentary staff, civil society organizations, and media professionals with essential skills and advanced knowledge of SSG/R. By creating a pool of trainers to educate and inform others within their institutions, organizations, and networks, we aim to generate a more overall informed and engaged approach with the ongoing reform processes in the country’s security sector. 19 Jul 2024

Supporting ombuds institutions in Colombia and Ecuador Recently, we helped bring together the Ombuds Offices of Colombia and Ecuador for an exchange to help strengthen their capacity to conduct effective oversight. They compared approaches to monitoring breaches of Humanitarian Law, addressing women's rights and gender issues, and improving complaint processes. Through these functions, ombuds institutions help ensure that security actors respect the rule of law and human rights, which in turn helps reduce conflict. This collaboration was possible thanks to the generosity of the German Embassies in Quito and Bogota. 18 Jul 2024

Advancing the Pact for the Future through SSG/R At the UN’s High Level Political Forum in New York last week we brought together experts to discuss the critical role of SSG/R in the prevention of violence and the achievement of the UN’s new Pact for the Future.  We are grateful for the contributions of the Permanent Missions of Costa Rica, The Gambia and Switzerland to the UN and others who shared their ideas and experiences. The development of the Pact for the Future offers a unique opportunity for UN Member States to prevent violence in all its forms, and as a complement to ongoing efforts to achieve the SDGs. 17 Jul 2024

Supporting better oversight of UN peacekeeping troops DCAF was in Mombasa last week with representatives of ombuds institutions to discuss how they can help provide better oversight of troops deployed as part of UN peacekeeping operations. Participants from several European and African ombuds institutions talked about how to monitor UN military deployments and address grievances, investigate complaints, and recommend corrective actions.  The goal was to develop policy responses for service personnel deployed abroad and, in turn, help safeguard the rights of both military personnel and civilians. It was done in partnership with The Commission on Administrative Justice of Kenya, with support from the German government. 10 Jul 2024
