Parliamentarians utilize remote technologies to ensure continuous oversight during the COVID-19 pandemic in the United Kingdom

In the United Kingdom (UK), both the House of Commons and the House of Lords utilized remote technologies in order to continue performing their oversight functions during the COVID-19 crisis, through a system that enabled parliamentarians to vote remotely using an online portal.

After parliamentary leadership put forward detailed plans for remote participation in temporary 'hybrid' parliamentary proceedings, and MPs agreed, the House of Lords adapted all its proceedings to the virtual format. Outside of the chamber, many committees have also conducted hybrid or remote evidence sessions, providing for more interplay between parliament and citizens. Open legislative processes like these foster transparency in the rule of law.
