In Latin American and the Caribbean, local actors seeking to advance SDG implementation have begun to see the Regional Agreement on Access to Information, Public Participation and Justice in Environmental Matters in Latin American and the Caribbean otherwise known as the Escazú Agreement as a valuable tool in achieving the SDGs. In Mexico, for example, compliance with the Escazú Agreement has been leveraged by CSOs to promote SDG 13, as well as SDG 16. It contributes to SDG 16 targets by supporting inclusive decision-making (16.7), reducing corruption (16.5), improving access to information (16.10), and protecting the ability of environmental defenders to protest without facing violence (16.1).
