In Africa, the reform of the defence sector is often the most urgent task facing societies emerging from conflict. Post-conflict challenges include the demobilisation, disarmament and reintegration of armed groups.
Where there is successful defence reform, new laws governing the armed forces, and new missions, doctrines and capabilities may be established. Defence and security committees are created to ensure that the armed forces are responsible, accountable, gender-sensitive and effective.
DCAF supports defence reform by providing expert advice to armed forces, national executives and parliaments on these processes. It also supports defence and peacekeeping training institutions in incorporating SSG/R components into their training curricula.
