Latin America and the Caribbean
Since 2002, DCAF has sustained cooperation with democratic institutions, security providers and NGOs in Central and South America on security sector governance issues. DCAF has placed particular emphasis on the development of democratic oversight, transparency and accountability mechanisms via parliamentary and civil society capacity building programming. In addition, DCAF has been active on defence, police and intelligence reform issues both with democratic institutions and the security sector itself. Collectively, these programmes have sought to create local ownership of national security problems and democratic reforms associated with them.
DCAF’s partners in the LAC region have included:
- Parliaments and their committees
- Armed, police and security forces
- Civil society and the media

In 2011, ‘Defence Policy in Latin America’ was added to this collection and two more on Defence Management and Parliamentary Powers in Security Sector Governance will be made available in Spanish in 2012.
